Hardcore Elemental Shaman Guide

Viability of the Elemental Shaman

Elemental Shamans in World of Warcraft Classic offer a unique and dynamic playstyle that blends raw spellcasting power with the utility and resilience of a hybrid class. Let's delve deeper into the viability of the Elemental Shaman in the challenging world of WoW Classic.

Leveling Viability Hardcore Shaman

When it comes to leveling, Elemental Shamans can face a bit of an uphill battle early on. Their main source of damage, Lightning Bolt, has a hefty cast time and can lead to a lot of time spent drinking due to high mana consumption. Furthermore, Shamans in general have limited crowd control options, which can make handling multiple enemies challenging.

However, Elemental Shamans have a substantial toolkit to survive tricky situations. Abilities like Frost Shock can keep enemies at bay while Earthbind Totem can be used to slow multiple foes. Healing spells also provide self-sustain, which is a significant asset when leveling in Hardcore mode.

Around level 40, things start to take a turn for the better. Elemental Shamans receive Chain Lightning, a powerful spell that hits multiple enemies. In addition, a key talent called Elemental Mastery becomes available, which guarantees your next spell will critically hit and cost no mana.

Raid Viability

Elemental Shamans are sometimes overlooked when it comes to raiding, primarily due to their mana inefficiency over long fights. However, they provide several key advantages that can make them valuable additions to a raid group.

One of the most significant benefits Elemental Shamans bring to a raid is the totems they can drop. These provide a variety of buffs to the raid group, enhancing damage output, reducing damage taken, or even restoring mana over time.

When it comes to damage, Elemental Shamans can output respectable numbers, particularly when they are able to use their AoE spells like Chain Lightning and Earthquake effectively. The main challenge remains managing mana effectively to sustain damage output throughout longer fights.

Best Races

Shamans are a distinctive class reserved for the Horde, playable as Orcs, Trolls, and Tauren.

In the realm of Elemental Shamans, Trolls emerge as the optimal choice. The Berserking racial trait enhances casting speed, while Beast Slaying provides significant value throughout the leveling process given the substantial time spent combating beasts.

However, Tauren remain a reliably safe selection due to their War Stomp ability. Additionally, their increased base stamina certainly adds to their appeal.

While Orcs don't offer explicit benefits for spellcasting, they possess the Hardiness racial trait that provides resistance to stuns. Before reaching level 40, a considerable amount of time will be spent engaging in auto-attacks, maintaining the relevance of the Axe Specialization and Blood Fury traits.

Stat Analysis and Weights

Before Level 40:

Intellect = Strength > Stamina > Spirit > Agility

After Level 40:

Intellect > Stamina >> Spirit > Strength >> Agility

Stat Conversion

In Hardcore WoW Classic, an Elemental Shaman’s stat priority goes through a significant shift as you level up, reflecting the transition from a melee/spellcasting hybrid role to a more spellcasting-centric role.

Before Level 40:

When starting out, Elemental Shamans engage quite a bit in melee combat, hence the need for a balance of stats:

  1. Intellect = Strength: Both stats are equally important. Intellect boosts your mana pool and spell critical chance, which is crucial for your spellcasting. Strength increases your melee attack power, helping with your auto attacks and Stormstrike.

  2. Stamina > Spirit: Stamina increases your health pool and is valuable for survival, particularly in Hardcore mode where death is final. Spirit improves your health and mana regeneration, which helps with sustainability but is less crucial than Stamina.

  3. Agility: It falls last in the priority list pre-level 40. Although it increases your critical strike chance and armor, as a Shaman, you don't benefit as much from Agility as some other classes might.

After Level 40:

Post level 40, as Elemental Shamans transition into focusing more on spellcasting, the stat priority shifts dramatically:

  1. Intellect > Stamina: Intellect becomes the most crucial stat, as it increases your mana pool and your spell critical hit chance, both essential for dealing high spell damage. Stamina remains important for survival but becomes less critical than Intellect.

  2. Spirit >> Strength: Spirit moves up in priority because of its impact on mana regeneration, an increasingly important factor as you spend more time casting spells. Strength becomes far less important as you're no longer relying on melee attacks.

  3. Agility: Remains the least essential stat, as its benefits don't align with your primary role as a spellcaster.

Additionally, there's the emergence of new relevant stats:

  1. Spell Power: This boosts the damage of your spells, becoming an essential stat for Elemental Shamans past level 40. Prioritize gear that provides bonuses to Nature damage, as most of your damaging spells are Nature-based.

  2. Spell Crit: Critical hits deal massive damage to enemies, making this another valuable stat for Elemental Shamans, especially considering the Elemental Fury talent which increases the critical strike damage bonus of your spells.

  3. Mana Per 5 Seconds (MP5): This stat reflects how much mana you regain every 5 seconds, even while casting. As mana efficiency becomes crucial, this stat gains importance.

  4. Spell Hit: This increases the chance that your spells will hit the target and is particularly valuable in endgame content where enemies have a higher chance to resist spells.

Remember, gear in WoW Classic isn't as straightforward as in later versions of the game. It's often a balancing act, trying to get the right mix of stats while also considering other factors like the utility and survivability that certain pieces of gear provide. It's always worth remembering to wear what is best for your current level and role, rather than adhering strictly to a stat priority list.

Rotations

Elemental Shamans lay greater emphasis on Lightning Bolt damage, aiming to maximize LB casts.

Elemental Mastery, the ultimate talent in the Elemental Tree, is one of the best talents in Vanilla WoW. When activated, it guarantees that your next damaging spell will be a critical hit, and will also be free of mana cost. Thanks to spell batching, we can cast 2 spells under the effect of Elemental Mastery.

Here's the trick: First, activate Elemental Mastery, then cast Chain Lightning. Immediately after, cast Earth Shock / Frost Shock. Both spells will hit the target simultaneously, crit, and cost no mana. This tactic is extremely effective and can be repeated every 3 minutes to decimate an enemy.

In general, Elemental Mastery is best paired with Chain Lightning due to its high damage, high mana cost, and all cleaved hits critting.

Before level 40, Elemental Shamans still employ a hybrid melee/spellcaster style similar to Enhancement Shamans. Even while investing talent points in Elemental, we can't ignore melee!

After level 40, with 5/5 Lightning Mastery and a 2-second cast time on Lightning Bolt, more time is spent casting and less on melee.

The strategy before and after level 40 varies as follows:

Before level 40:

  • Pull with 1-2 Lightning Bolts

  • Flame Shock

  • Searing Totem

  • Earth Shock / Frost Shock

  • Re-apply Lightning Shield

After level 40:

  • Pull with 3-4 Lightning Bolts

  • Earthbind / Frost Shock - run a bit during the global cooldown.

  • 1-2 Lightning Bolts

  • Earth Shock / Frost Shock if the mob will die quickly

  • Flame Shock if the mob will live longer

Though seemingly simple, timing the casting of our spells, knowing when to hold them and merely auto-attack, and using our totems correctly can greatly enhance our efficiency.

One tactic involves having a "burst" rotation and a "sustained" rotation.

Kiting Enemies

Elemental Shamans can also kite enemies effectively. Here is a general rotation for kiting:

  1. Cast Lightning Bolt until the enemy is close.

  2. Use Frost Shock and move away during the global cooldown.

  3. Repeat steps 1-2 as needed.

  4. If Frost Shock is on cooldown, use Earthbind Totem and move away from the enemy.

  5. When the enemy is out of range again, repeat steps 1-2.

This process allows you to manage your mana effectively while also keeping enemies at a safe distance.

Leveling in Groups

If you're leveling in a group, your role changes a bit. You're more of a support, offering damage and utility to your team. In groups, your rotation might look something like this:

  • Keep Totems active for your party's benefit (Mana Spring Totem, Stoneskin Totem, etc.)

  • Use Lightning Bolt as your main damage spell

  • Use Chain Lightning when multiple enemies are close together

  • Use Earth Shock for interrupting enemy casting

  • Use Healing Wave or Lesser Healing Wave to heal allies as needed

  • Use Frost Shock for slowing enemies that are attacking your party's squishier members

This group rotation aims to maximize your utility and damage while also assisting in group survivability.

Remember, a well-rounded Shaman is not only a damage dealer but also a significant contributor to the group's overall success. Your ability to heal, buff allies with totems, and control the battlefield with spells like Frost Shock and Earthbind Totem can make a significant difference.

Professions

Herbalism and Alchemy (TOP PICK)

For Elemental Shamans tackling Hardcore mode, Alchemy stands out as an optimal choice. It allows for personalized stat enhancements as well as essential health and mana potions. Elemental Shamans have an array of escape tactics, but these all necessitate mana; thus, avoiding a situation where one runs out of mana and can't cast Stoneclaw or Ghost Wolf is crucial.

Engineering and Mining

For all classes, including Elemental Shamans, Engineering proves to be an invaluable profession.

Items such as Iron Grenades provide a crucial disable option (since slows are the only available option for Elemental Shamans). Additional escape tools, such as the Target Dummy, contribute to increased survivability. Further damage output from explosives like Dense Dynamite can fill in gaps in the Elemental Shaman's spell rotation.

While Engineering requires more investment compared to the immediate gains from Alchemy, it can provide similar or even greater benefits during your Hardcore journey.

Tailoring

Unexpectedly, Tailoring emerges as a somewhat feasible option for Hardcore Elemental Shamans. The immediate advantage is the ability to create bags, but more importantly, the crafting of gear with heightened Intelligence proves extremely beneficial for those intending to heal in dungeons - a role that Elemental Shamans should indeed consider. For Elemental Shamans, the Bloodvine Set presents a potent endgame equipment option. When compared to Leatherworking, Tailoring is a more attractive choice for Elemental Shamans due to the latter's lack of recipes featuring Intelligence and Spell Power.

Progression of Weapons

For Elemental shamans, it's tempting to overlook the importance of weapons and consider them just as stat sticks. However, remember that we will be dealing hybrid damage for the initial 40 levels of our journey.

During this phase, our main focus will be on obtaining weapons with the highest DPS, irrespective of the speed of the weapon, with the weapon's stats considered secondary.

Post level 40, as we gradually transition into a pure spell caster role, the weapon indeed becomes more of a stat stick. At this point, having a one-handed weapon and a shield becomes a priority due to the armor and block chances they provide.
